NATIONAL THEME
Karishye Vachanam Tava
I will do as you say
We are pleased to share our collective National Theme for the 2026-27 term “Karishye Vachanam Tava”. This when translated is “I will do as You Say”. The Sanskrit line is part of a verse in the final chapter of the Bhagavat Gita (Ch 18, Verse 73) and in its entirety reads as
follows:
“Arjuna said: O Infallible One, by Your grace my illusion has been dispelled, and I am situated in knowledge. I am now free from doubts, and I shall act according to Your instructions.” [BG18.73]
The statement has been referenced numerous times by Swami, but on 30 April 1997, in Sai Shruti Hall, Kodaikanal, Swami explained the following:
“...on the battlefield, the same Arjuna complained, “How can I kill my own kith and kin? Take me back home, I cannot fight this battle.” At this point in time, Krishna imparted the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. From the first to the last Shloka of the first chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna complained and lamented, yet Krishna did not utter a single word. When Arjuna stopped, Krishna asked, “Has your
entire stock been exhausted? Now I will tell you what you have to do: listen.” After listening to the words of Krishna, Arjuna said, “I shall do whatever You command me to do – Karishye Vachanam Tava.” First, Arjuna considered himself a great hero unrivalled in archery. But ultimately, he became a servant. Only then did Krishna take complete responsibility for guiding and protecting him.
